Submission Info
Broadly Textual is seeking submissions from graduate students across disciplines that engage the public in analyses of literature, media, education, art, and culture.
Broadly Textual is a graduate student-run blog that invites contributors to consider how their own work can be made to critically converse with a wide general audience, through both content and style. For the Fall 2026 semester, we seek submissions which speak to the broad theme of Relationality. Relationality might include relationships between human and environment, university and public, students and safety, culture and technology, the past and the future, or other interpretations of relationality (spatial, social, and temporal) that are of interest to you.
If you have an idea that falls outside of the scope of this call that you’d like to explore, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the editing staff to discuss it further! We welcome proposals (formal and informal) outside of the seasonal theme.
Submissions can be written or visual (more details for videographic submissions here). We invite written submissions of about 1000 words which address the following:
- interviews with scholars practicing inside and outside the academy
- creative nonfiction or reflections on creative work
- engagement with contemporary political, social, and cultural issues through research and analysis
- explorations on crossing the boundaries between the “academy” and the “public” (i.e., engaged humanities work)
- readings and/or reviews of historical and literary texts (broadly defined) for a non-academic audience
Works can be entirely new ones or can be adaptations of work previously completed for classes or outside research projects. We compensate writers $75 per post*. We provide free editing services on your pieces, so this can be good workshopping practice, as well as a low-pressure publication for your CV.
*Unfortunately, at this time payment can only be remitted to Syracuse University
students. Submissions from SUNY ESF, SUNY Upstate, or graduate students from institutions not affiliated with SU will be happily considered for publication, but ineligible for payment.
Submissions will be considered on a rolling basis through the end of the semester. Please
send your proposals and any inquiries directly to our email broadlytextual@gmail.com with your contact information in the signature.
